Rarely offered in Australia , Dahlia merckii is a species Dahlia from Mexico . More cold hardy than many of the varieties often seen in nurseries and gardens . Flowers are usually delicate lilac and single ,on occasion paler colours may be produced. After the top growth has died down ,tubers can be left in the ground during Winter if the soil is very well drained and mulched. Alternatively you can lift them if you wish to be on the safe side. Dahlia merckii will reach over a metre in height and is best in a sheltered part of the garden in a sunny ,free draining position. Perfect for loose ,naturalistic combinations .
